Why should I backup my data? Believe it or not, there are individuals out there that really don’t know the answer to this question. What seems obvious to some of us may not be quite so clearly outlined for others. A bit of enlightenment…

In 1996, over $800 Million was done in damage to corporate and private data systems via hacking, malware and spam, amongst other malicious attacks. Compared to the $275 Billion done in damage in 2003, it’s obvious that malicious attacks, including hacking, malware, and spam are on the rise.

That doesn’t include server and system failures, employee tampering, child curiosity or simple user error. How important is your data to you? If it’s not important to you, then you won’t mind having to wipe, reinstall and start over on all the work saved on your computer when your data is lost.

Or perhaps you are concerned and you do value your data. But what do you do? You could lose all of your data at any minute. There’s a lot of sensitive information that, if lost, could prevent your child from finishing his science experiment, stop you from receiving an important email, or worse, bring your company to its knees. What do I need to backup? Determining what you need to backup can be just as crucial as the backup itself. The reasoning behind this is simple: you will have to spend money; the question is how much will you have to spend? The amount you spend is entirely dependent on your needs, which takes us right back to the question, doesn’t it? Here are a few scenarios that might fit your mold, from the easiest to the hardest.

Beginner Backup You have a few school reports, maybe a few emails from some friends and family, possibly a few pictures to go with those emails. There is nothing here that would suggest that you need a solution worthy of NASA. If it’ll fit, storing these mementos on a 3-1/2” floppy would be ideal, as the media drive is cheap (so cheap, in fact, it comes free with most store-bought computers) and so is the media. The downside to 3-1/2” floppies are the speed. They’re über-slow.

You might be better off going with a CD-R or CD-RW, both disc burners. A CD-R is a write-once medium. Most computers come with at least a CD-R, while others come with the CD-RW or DVD-writer. The CD-RW is a re-writeable medium, meaning that unlike a CD-R, it’s possible to erase a CD-RW disc and write to it again. The disc prices are fairly cheap in the grand scheme of things, and if you don’t already have one, the disc drive itself can be had for around $30 brand new.

Wireless Hot Spots Expected to Further Pekin’s Internet needs

Pekin— August 2, 2005— Today NTS announced the first of many wireless Hot Spots to be developed in and around the Pekin area. The Pekin Park Lagoon, and surrounding area, which covers a radius of approximately a quarter mile is the first Hot Spot implemented with many more Public use areas planned.

NTS Announces ADSL and ReachDSL Services
NTS is proud to announce the inclusion of ADSL and ReachDSL Broadband services to our product line. NTS is the only company providing the Reach Technology to Pekin area businesses. In today’s competitive marketplace a dedicated, reliable, and fast Internet connection is a must.
